Made over the past two years, the paintings use intuition and spontaneity to build up layered surfaces in which movement and visual intensity are achieved through an expanded vocabulary of gesture and mark. While continuous with Kaplan's earlier large-scale bouquet paintings in their expressive tactility and dynamic space, these works feel harder-won: provisional completions arrived at through grace, accident, and struggle. The title functions on two levels: as a literal description of the material experience the paintings offer, and as a metaphor for navigating the unexpected, both in the painting process and in the chaos of the present moment.
