WILDFLOWERS, NIGHT
September 15th – October 27th, 2024
La Loma Projects Annex: 1357 Brixton Road, Pasadena, CA 91105 (By appointment only)
La Loma Projects is pleased to present Wildflowers, Night, a solo exhibition of new intimately-scaled paintings by Rebecca Partridge. The exhibition will be the London-based artist’s first solo presentation in the United States, opening Sunday, September 14, 2024.
The Wildflowers, Night paintings meld an exuberant exterior world with an energetic interior consciousness. In these works, viewers can feel the life of wild nature—rising and falling from dusk until dawn, blossoming and withering through mist and nightfall. Rich with exquisite detail, her paintings encourage close observation to unearth their poetic investigations of place.
Working with carefully applied layers of oil paint and pigment, Partridge achieves a cinematic sensibility. Each scene of Wildflowers, Night explores the expressive capacity of a restrictive palette at a constrained scale. In particular, Wildflowers, Night (I), 2024 sets the tone and atmosphere for the series, with its delicate French lilac flowers, fine branches and soft olive-green pastel stalks functioning almost as architectural structures that create discrete areas on the picture plane.
With pristine, high-gloss surfaces and accentuated colors—perhaps most evident in Wildflowers, Night (Lunaria, honesty), 2024, the artist has described the strange and compelling beauty that is elicited in night scenes. “One of the nice things regarding these paintings is—and what I did not realize about the way that colors works at night—is that they do not become any less vibrant. They are still deeply purple and vibrantly yellow. It is a really rich spectrum.”
