LA LOMA PROJECTS is pleased to present Pauli & Paules, a collection of new works by the ceramicist Jude Pauli and the sculptor Adrian Paules.

Jude Pauli is presenting eight new hand-built ceramic works, each an intricate Bauhaus tower of smartly interlocking shapes. In these clever geometric pieces, Pauli has combined crushed red brick, hemp, sawdust, grog, iron oxide and sand to form the clay body. The color and texture of the unglazed surfaces read like geological material, the melted brick nodules sprouting from the rusty iron like a message from the volcanic heat of the kiln. Pauli built each sculpture out of many parts, not unlike a NASA rocket. These “rockets” stand alongside Adrian Paules’s Metallica, a new series of inscribed aluminum surfaces. Deceptively alike in appearance, each panel’s surface is abraded in multiple directions using a straight edge, the grain from each direction mimicking the action of lines in a drawing. The compositions shift with the movement of the viewer, different vantage points yielding new areas of light and dark on the lustrous surfaces. Paules’s stark, brutal, elemental pieces, together with Pauli’s noble architectural assemblages, reflect both artists’ understanding and interrogation of their materials.
